1- Add soup ingredients to the slow cooker first then add water only to cover. If thinner soup is desired, add more liquid at serving time. If you have too much liquid near the end of cook time, simply transfer it to a saucepan and reduce.

2- Fresh herbs should be added at the end of the cooking cycle as the flavor will dissipate over log cook times. Ground and dried herbs and spices work well in slow cooking and may be added at the beginning.

3- Preheat your slow cooker. Yes, a slow cooker is like a small oven and this extra minutes matters a lot.

4-Fish cooks quickly and should be added during last 15 minutes to hour of cooking.

5- Trim fat, rinse well, and pat meat dry with paper towels.

6- Meat should be positioned so that it rests in the stoneware without touching the lid.

7- Dried beans, especially red kidney beans, should be boiled before adding to a recipe.

8- Fully cooked canned beans may be used as substitute for dried beans.

9- Place vegetables near the sides or bottom of the stoneware to facilitate cooking, vegetables usually cook slower than meat in the slow cooker.

10- Cook the pasta in a pot of boiling water until just tender and add the pasta to the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of cook time.
